It is also important to understand the difference between disk defragmentation and disk optimization. Because disk access is fast on modern HDD's, it is true that this may be a non-issue when preloading tracks into memory play, however, the anal-retentive in me likes to keep my files tidy. Whenever I add to or change my music file tags, the utility often shows fragmented file forks. This is entirely NOT necessary with OS X, as it "auto-defrags" on its own.

IDEFRAG 2.0 SOFTWARE

I use "Speed Tools 3", from Intech Software (free with OWC hard drives). A good disk utility can keep things running cleanly. Just changing one tag or album's cover art can fragment the "file fork". This may be slightly off-topic, but periodically defragmenting the volume on which your music files are stored is very important. I'd bet there are a hundred other users who would, too.

Note to Damien, if you see this: I would pay full price again for "A+ Classic", as described. I agree with your other points, especially the last one. If A+ 2.0.x has similar issues, I want no part of it. I was unable to correct the supposedly messed-up files with JRMC's tagging editor, not to mention how tedious it was to attempt.

IDEFRAG 2.0 PLUS

All the versions of Audirvana Plus 1.x.x that I have always display everything perfectly. My files read correctly with all recent iterations of iTunes. How hard can it be for the app to read and sort that out? I only employ track title, track number, artist, album artist, and cover art.

IDEFRAG 2.0 FOR MAC

Not to be argumentative, but to your first point, I demo'ed JRMC for Mac and, upon importing my library of 1400 albums, at least 5% sorted as "unassigned".

With the latest sound engine but without all of the file management? I would use version 2.0 all the time in that case, if it only had drag-and-drop capability. Why not have a 2.0 version of the app called 'Audirvana Plus Classic' or 'Audirvana Plus Lite' where it's a stand-alone player No, Audirvana Plus 2.x should be much more forgiving of metadata and just import and list/play the sound files without an issue. It may not look pretty, but it's all there without hanging up the app.Īnd since when it is my responsibility to properly sort out the metadata of all of my sound files (all of which are valid, non-corrupt files according to my OS utilities) for a music player to list them without crashing? It imports the thousands of songs no problem. The imperfect metadata doesn't bother Jriver's Media Center application. Your metadata is in your own hands to sort out. Not everybody has your particular problems.ģ. That doesn't change the fact that much has been achieved with V2 as well.Ģ. One other possible explanation for the length of this thread could simply be the fact that there is a high level of interest in A+ as it is clearly one of the best players for Mac out today.ġ. I'm sorry, but I disagree that the fact hat this thread is long means that Audirvana is a "mess", it actually works fine in most instances and you'll only see those with issues reporting here, which as I've said previously and stick to, are probably 90% user errors due to the complexity of the program.

IDEFRAG 2.0 UPDATE

I think its a pity that thats been depreciated, but again thats Damiens call.Īn update to Fidelia is due any day, otherwise I can only hope that someone else will step up, because the Mac choices are pretty limited right now. I'm happy with a simple "audio transport", and will be sticking with 1.5.x.

And speculating about Damiens ability, workload, commitment, etc, is just that: speculation. Well, version 2 has, IMO, been a mess since it was rushed out, as 84 pages of problems and comments here show. I understand that my choice means that I gave up some tagging functionality but as I stated earlier in this threat, the market of audiophile software players is brittle and not very mature and professional, so putting all eggs in one basket is not a wise decision in my opinion. This works perfect so I don't miss the ability to 'drag and drop'. Probably it is the combination of everything.Īs for the DB, like wwaldmanfan I use good old iTunes to keep everything organised and sync now and then in Audirvana and use the latter stand alone. May be it is because I use a stand alone converter, may be it is because I use very good digital cables, may be it is because my DAC isn't a 'conventional' one, may be it is because of the A+ build in SRC. I tried all other OSX player and also the Windows options. I am enjoying A+ 2.09 a lot and for me it delivers the best sound from a software player in my system. Besides some bigger 'marketing' players of course. But unfortunately that is what most higher end audio is about, a lot of little boutique players that service a niche market. I feel the same about the vulnerability off one-man-shows.
